Cosmology Contemplating the Universe No. 109

Cosmology Contemplating the Universe No. 109 unfolds as a dense, shifting field in which forms emerge, dissolve, and reorganize before the eye. Mineral greens, softened pinks, greys, and flashes of luminous color move through overlapping fragments part organic, part mechanical, part symbolic creating a pictorial space that resists any single point of orientation.

Executed in mineral pigments on Kumohada hemp paper, the work carries a distinctive material depth and permanence. Rooted in a centuries-old painting tradition, mineral pigments are valued for their enduring chromatic presence, allowing color and surface to retain their vitality across generations when properly preserved. Here, that sense of material continuity echoes the work’s subject: a universe in perpetual transformation, where the microscopic and the infinite, the ancient and the yet unknown, seem to coexist within the same field.

Curator’s Note:
The strength of Cosmology: Contemplating the Universe No. 109 lies in its ability to hold instability and permanence at once. Dense clusters of drawn and painted forms are suspended within broad fields of color, generating tension between accumulation and openness, structure and flux.

Its mineral pigments are integral to this experience. Beyond their distinctive luminosity and physical presence, they belong to an enduring material tradition capable of carrying color across centuries. Against this sense of permanence, the imagery remains fluid and unresolved continually shifting between the recognizable and the unknown. The result is a work in which material longevity and cosmic transformation exist in deliberate tension, inviting new discoveries with each encounter.
